much longer to get your entries into Andrea Machado for the Chinese
Camp trial. Contact her at 209-874-4440 or 530-864-0255 for

WCDA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND AWARDS DINNER
Palomino Room, Red Bluff CA
January 28, 2009
Close to three dozen WCDA members, families and friends met up for an
evening of business and socialization during the Red Bluff Bull and
Gelding Sale. Normally closed on Wednesday nights, Randy Leak of
the Palomino Room in Red Bluff opened up special for this event and we
thank you very, very much for the gesture. After a reading of the
minutes from the last meeting by Secretary (and now, also, Treasurer)
Wes Woolery and a clarification of a new rule on how to break a tie for
year end awards, the business portion was done. Toward the end of
dinner, President Roger Urricelqui and Trial Coordinator Cindy Nelson
handed out the much awaited Pit River Series and WCDA 2008 Year End
Awards. Cindy's efforts obtaining sponsorships for these awards
was well noted as 1st place winners in each class were presented with
trophy buckles and jackets. An assortment of other awards were
handed out for 2nd through 5th place in each class. The evening
rounded out with dessert and cocktails and strategy-planning by
contestants for the remaining two runs of the Red Bluff Bull and
Gelding Sale Stock Dog competition.
Thank You
submitted by Roger Lopes and Toots (his dog:)
On behalf of Toots and I, we would like to thank everyone affiliated
with the WCDA for putting on some great cattle dog trials. We
both enjoyed competing in the Rancher Class for the last two
years. We have met some good people and got to see some good
country. We could not have had a better introduction to
competitive cattle dog trialing. We appreciate the time and hard
work donated by the WCDA officers, directors and all those that help
make these trials so enjoyable.
To start with, I would like to thank Sugar Pomeroy for being the key
person that coached, supported and directed us to the WCDA. A
special thank you to Peter Stent, the Gilligan family and the Kramer
family for your warm hospitality. We missed the McArthur trial
this year, but we sure had fun in 2007! Last, but not least, we
would like to thank everyone who sponsored awards and buckles,
including Ken Silva Masonary. Toots and I are honored to be
receipients of the two beautiful Red Bluff buckles for the 2008 WCDA
Rancher Class Champions and the 2008 Pit River Series High Point
Rancher Dog. Along with the buckles we received a nice warm-up
jacket by Columbia Sportswear.
Thank you all, again, for the great trials and generous awards.
Toots has her work cut out for her in 2009 and you folks will have to
understand she can only do so much with what she has to work
with...me. We are looking forward to the 2009 season. Ready
or not...Toots and Roger Lopes

RED BLUFF BULL AND GELDING AND STOCK DOG
SALE
Tehama County Fairgrounds, Red Bluff CA
January 27-31, 2009
The Western Cattle Dog Association recognizes the outstanding
achievements of the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding and Stock Dog Sale
Committee in their promotion of the Working Cattle Dog.
The annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale is one of the busiest weeks
in the year for the WCDA. Not only do we have a strong member
showing in the Stock Dog Competition and Sale (this year twelve of the
twenty entries were WCDA members with 68% of the sale figures), but our
vendor booth is running full throttle for four days. Promoting
information on the working dogs and selling tickets on our "Battle of
the Breeds" puppy drawing kept volunteers hopping. Exciting
results came about for the club at this year's event...1) member Roger
Urricelqui and his entry, Buster, walked away with the Champion buckle
and cash 2) member Craig Eddins' entry, 9-Mile Al, brought in the
high-sale at $10,000 and 3) our puppy drawing ticket sales tripled last
year's figure. Congratulations to all the winners, particularly
the new puppy owners. Conrad's CeeCee, aka the Kelpie Kid, now
owned by Robyn Caldwell of Redding CA. Robyn is the daughter of
Art Abbott, a familiar cattle rancher in this area, and a family of
working Kelpies. Perfect match! Kim Collins of Healdsburg
CA took possession of Top Rail's Pollyana, aka Pollywog the Super Dog,
on Valentine's Day and has a cattle family thrilled with their new
addition. Granny of the Peckerwood Puppy Program is very happy,
and relieved, with the new homes of her outstanding protegees.
SKUCE CATTLE DOG TRIAL
Skuce Pavilion, McArthur CA
January 25, 2009
Submitted by Cindy Nelson
There was a great turnout
for the first WCDA sanctioned trial of 2009. The trial had
twenty-one Open Class dogs and six Started dogs, with Shannon Blasdell
and Moxie filling out the Rancher Class. Trial Director Jim
Gilligan did a great job setting up the course. Thanks to Jim and
his set-out crew for a great job. The cattle were donated by the
Albaugh family and George and Christine McArthur of McArthur
Liverstock. Some of these "critters" proved to be a bit of a
challenge to the dogs. Bill Boyd with Will came out on top in the
Open Class, as well as Bill and Rusty taking the Started Class.
The highlight of the day was watching six dogs bound for the Red Bluff
Bull and Gelding Sale's Stock Dog Sale, compete in a jackpot
class. Congratulations to winners, Ambrose McAuliffe and Pepper.
The WCDA would like to
thank Carpenter Trucking for hauling in the cattle. Thanks to
Ruth Woolery and family for everything you do! To everyone that
brought goodies, it was much appreciated and Diane, those beans were
delicious!!! Because of the generousity of the Albaugh family and
McArthur Livestock in donating the cattle for this trial, $1,250 was
raised for the Skuce Pavilion.

CONRAD'S
CeeCee...
Right after the first of January the WCDA's raffle pup, Conrad's
CeeCee, came into the Peckerwood Puppy Program to catch up with the
other raffle pup, Top Rail's PollyAnna. The Urricelqui family did
a great job caring and nuturing this outgoing, happy young dog.
Unfortunately, two days after CeeCee's arrival the ewes started
lambing, so we put off the sheep work and concentrated on ground rules
and puppy basics. Being my first time working with a Kelpie, I
have to admire the strength and determination she has. CeeCee
tries so hard to please and do the right thing. When we finally
did get out to the sheep, the "Kelpie Kid" showed me a natural balance
and strong presence. She was not unruly or overly aggressive with
the stock, but they knew she had the power to take care of the
job. To my amazement, CeeCee was very gentle and patient with the
lambs...ain't a dirty butt on the place. Another interesting fact
about Kelpies is their tails are made of lead. I was working with
an older Border Collie pup at our pond, training on the command "bring
it" where the pups have to find a stick or toy in the water and they
fetch it back to me.
CeeCee had been observing from the far side of the
pond and finally, couldn't hold back any longer. She bailed into
the water and commenced to floundering around, not certain what to do
next. I started calling her to me and she lined out toward my
voice, pert-near drowning herself from the splashing of her front
feet. I never did see her tail or rear end above water, but
CeeCee has a strong set of front shoulders and got herself across the
span to the happy "atta girl"s waiting for her on the bank. Polly
was barking encouragement the whole way. The winners of this
year's puppy drawings are going to be lucky people indeed. These
two little gals are very special.
WCDA 2008 TOP TEN
